Azalea japonica Vuyk’s Scarlet is grown for its lovely form and profuse flowering. This hardy, evergreen shrub produces masses of fragrant, single, dark pink-red flowers from winter through spring. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide, growing best when planted in a semi-shade or full sun position on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates but does require good soil moisture levels during dry periods and should be protected from heavy frost while establishing. When fertilising, avoid using lime as this will stunt or even kill plants.
