Azalea 'Apex Flame'

How to grow Azalea 'Apex Flame' in NZ

Grow Azalea 'Apex Flame' in a sunny or lightly shaded position with moist, free draining, acid soil. Choose a sheltered site protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds, especially in warmer regions. Improve the planting area with compost and an acid plant mix, then set the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist while the shrub establishes. Mulch around the base with organic material to conserve moisture and maintain cool, healthy roots.

Azalea 'Apex Flame' care tips

Azalea 'Apex Flame' benefits from regular watering, light feeding, and gentle pruning after flowering to keep it compact and healthy. Water deeply during dry weather, particularly while the plant is establishing, but avoid waterlogged soil. Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid loving plants according to label directions. Remove faded flowers once the main display has finished, then lightly trim any wayward growth to maintain a tidy shape. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as this can reduce the next season's flowering.

Azalea 'Apex Flame' size, spacing, and growth rate

Azalea 'Apex Flame' typically grows about 1 m tall and 1 m wide, forming a compact rounded shrub with a colourful garden presence. Allow around 80 cm to 1 m between plants so each shrub has room to develop, receives good airflow, and creates a full display without crowding. Growth is moderate in moist, fertile acid soil, with the strongest growth occurring through spring and summer. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a dense habit and encourages fresh growth for the following season.

Landscaping uses for Azalea 'Apex Flame'

Azalea 'Apex Flame' is ideal for mixed borders, woodland gardens, entrance planting, patio pots, and mass planting in sheltered garden spaces. Its brilliant flowers create a strong focal point and pair beautifully with green foliage, ferns, camellias, and other acid loving plants. Use it near paths and outdoor living areas for a seasonal colour display, or plant several together for a bold effect. The compact habit also makes Azalea 'Apex Flame' a practical choice for smaller gardens and decorative containers.
