Aucuba japonica Crotonifolia, commonly known as Aucuba japonica Spotted Laurel, is a large and colourful shrub that features bold leaves marked with gold and green. Small, star-shaped, purple flowers in spring are followed by bright red, egg-shaped berries. It will grow to about 3 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance is achieved when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods and will grow on most soil conditions but should be protected from frost when young. Aucuba Crotonifolia is commonly planted around the barbecue area, included in mixed plantings, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, used for screening and privacy, or planted in a shady corner.
