Aucuba Crotonoides is a large and colourful shrub that features leaves that are variegated gold and green. The foliage is adorned with small, purple flowers in spring which are followed by bright red berries in summer. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this evergreen is achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods, moderate frost, reasonable shade, and will grow on most soils, except at the extremes of wet and dry. Aucuba japonica Crotonoides is commonly planted around outdoor living areas, included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted for screening and privacy, or positioned to brighten a dull corner.
