Abutilon Roseus

How to grow Abutilon Roseus in NZ

Abutilon Roseus grows best in full sun or partial shade and prefers fertile, free draining soil. It thrives in warm, sheltered locations and tolerates light frost once established. When planting, enrich the soil with compost or organic matter to encourage strong root growth. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first summer. This hardy shrub performs well in most NZ regions and rewards with abundant flowers over many months.

Abutilon Roseus care tips

Abutilon Roseus is easy to maintain and responds well to pruning. Trim lightly after flowering or in late winter to encourage fresh growth and maintain a compact shape. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow release fertiliser to promote strong growth and prolific blooming. Water regularly during dry spells and apply mulch to retain soil moisture. Removing spent flowers helps extend the display, ensuring the shrub remains vibrant throughout the season.

Abutilon Roseus size, spacing, and growth rate

Abutilon Roseus typically grows 1.5–2.5 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide. It has a moderate to fast growth rate and forms a naturally rounded, bushy habit. When planting as part of a group or border, space shrubs about 1–1.2 metres apart. Its tidy structure and long flowering period make it a perfect choice for adding colour and softness to mixed garden borders, courtyard plantings, or as a feature shrub in sunny NZ gardens.

Landscaping uses for Abutilon Roseus

Abutilon Roseus is ideal for adding elegance and continuous colour to cottage gardens, mixed borders, and flower filled landscapes. Its rose pink blooms provide a lovely contrast against green foliage and blend beautifully with other vibrant shrubs such as salvia, lavender, and hibiscus. It also performs well in containers or near walls and fences where its blooms can be admired. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, adding life to NZ gardens.
