Abutilon Red, commonly known as Chinese Lantern, Red Flowering Maple, or Parlour Maple, features showy, intense red, lantern-shaped flowers from spring through autumn. The leaves are dark green and blend nicely with the flowers. It will generally remain evergreen, but can become deciduous in cooler regions. This shrub grows compactly to about 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. It performs best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of moderate frost, and short periods of dry. Abutilon Red is commonly included in mixed plantings, maintained in a container, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, planted around outdoor living areas, or included in cottage gardens.
