Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard

How to grow Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard in NZ

Grow Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard in a sunny position with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Plant so the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil, then water deeply to settle the roots. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, particularly through warm and dry weather. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base while keeping it clear of the stem. Stake the standard securely to prevent wind damage and check ties regularly. Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard can also be grown successfully in a large container with quality potting mix.

Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard care tips

Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard benefits from regular feeding, watering, and pruning to maintain healthy growth and strong flowering. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and repeat during the growing season according to label directions. Water deeply during dry periods, directing water to the soil rather than the foliage where possible. Remove spent flower clusters to encourage repeat flowering. Prune in winter to maintain a balanced rounded head and remove weak, damaged, or crossing growth. Keep the standard securely staked and monitor for common rose pests and diseases so any problems can be treated promptly.

Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard is trained as a standard rose with a clear stem supporting a rounded flowering head. Overall height depends on the grafted stem, but established plants commonly reach around 1.2 to 1.5 m tall with a head approximately 70 cm to 1 m wide. Space plants around 1 m apart to allow good airflow and room for the canopy to develop. Growth is moderate during spring and summer, with regular feeding, watering, and pruning helping maintain a dense, balanced head and strong repeat flowering through the warmer months.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard

Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard is ideal for entranceways, patios, formal gardens, pathways, courtyards, containers, and feature planting. Its clear stem and rounded head of creamy white flowers create useful height without taking up excessive ground space, making it especially effective beside doors, along paths, or in matching pairs. Use it as a focal point in a garden bed or place it in a large decorative pot for a more formal look. Rose 'Sally Holmes' Standard also works well in repeated planting where its consistent shape and long flowering season create rhythm and structure.
