Rose 'Sally Holmes'

How to grow Rose 'Sally Holmes' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Sally Holmes' in a sunny position with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Plant so the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil, then water deeply to settle the roots. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, particularly through warm and dry weather. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base while keeping it clear of the stems. A site receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day will encourage strong flowering. Rose 'Sally Holmes' can also be grown successfully in a large container filled with quality potting mix.

Rose 'Sally Holmes' care tips

Rose 'Sally Holmes' benefits from regular feeding, watering, and pruning to maintain healthy growth and strong flowering. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and repeat during the growing season according to label directions. Water deeply during dry periods, directing water to the soil rather than the foliage where possible. Remove spent flower clusters to encourage repeat flowering and keep the plant tidy. Prune in winter to remove weak, damaged, or crossing stems and shape the plant. Monitor for common rose pests and diseases through the season so any issues can be treated early.

Rose 'Sally Holmes' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Sally Holmes' forms a vigorous, upright shrub that commonly grows to around 1.5 to 2 m tall and approximately 1.2 to 1.5 m wide when mature. Space plants around 1.2 to 1.5 m apart to allow good airflow and room for the branching canopy to develop. Growth is moderate to fast during spring and summer, particularly with regular feeding and watering. Full sun and fertile, free draining soil support strong stems and repeat flowering. Annual winter pruning helps maintain a balanced shape and encourages fresh flowering wood for the following season.
