Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard

How to grow Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard in NZ

Grow Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and a sheltered position. Choose a site that receives at least six hours of direct sunshine daily and protect the plant from strong winds that may damage the clear stem or flowering head. Improve the soil with compost, plant at the same depth as the root ball, and water thoroughly after planting. Secure the stem to a sturdy stake for support. Apply mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk, to retain moisture and reduce weed growth.

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard care tips

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard benefits from regular feeding, deep watering, deadheading, and careful pruning to keep the flowering head neat and vigorous. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and summer according to label directions. Water deeply at soil level during dry weather and remove spent flowers promptly to encourage repeat blooming. In winter, remove weak, damaged, and crossing stems from the head, then shorten the remaining growth to maintain a rounded shape. Check the stake and ties regularly, allowing enough room for the trunk to grow comfortably.

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' Standard usually has a clear stem of about 80 cm to 1 m, with the flowering head growing to around 1 m tall and wide. The mature plant can reach about 1.8 m to 2 m in overall height, depending on pruning and growing conditions. Allow around 1 m between plants to provide room for the crown, good airflow, and easy maintenance. Growth is moderate to vigorous through spring and summer when the rose is well watered and regularly fed.
