Rose 'Queen Elizabeth'

How to grow Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Select a sheltered position that receives at least six hours of direct sunshine daily for strong growth and generous flowering. Improve the planting area with compost, position the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water deeply after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist as the rose establishes, particularly in dry weather. Apply organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems, to retain moisture and help control weeds.

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' care tips

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' performs best with regular feeding, deep watering, deadheading, and winter pruning. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and summer according to label directions to support healthy foliage and repeat blooms. Water at soil level during dry periods so moisture reaches the roots without wetting the leaves unnecessarily. Remove spent flowers promptly to encourage more flowering through autumn. In winter, cut out weak, damaged, and crossing stems, then shorten the remaining growth to maintain a strong, balanced shape for the coming season.

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' typically grows about 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide, producing an upright shrub with impressive height and a graceful outline. Allow around 90 cm to 1 m between plants so each rose has room to grow, receives good airflow, and can be easily cared for. Growth is moderate to vigorous in fertile soil with regular watering and feeding. The strongest growth occurs through spring and summer, while winter pruning encourages fresh flowering stems and keeps Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' neat and well shaped.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Queen Elizabeth'

Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' is ideal for rose gardens, mixed borders, cottage gardens, and formal planting schemes where its upright habit adds valuable height. Use it as a feature plant, plant several together for a soft pink display, or combine it with lower growing perennials and shrubs for layered colour. Its long stems and refined flowers make it especially useful near paths, entrances, and outdoor living areas. Rose 'Queen Elizabeth' is also an excellent cutting rose, providing elegant blooms for vases and home arrangements.
