Rose 'Penelope'

How to grow Rose 'Penelope' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Penelope' in full sun in fertile, well drained soil. Choose a position that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day and has good airflow around the plant. Prepare the soil with compost before planting, set the roots at the same depth as they were in the pot, and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist while the rose establishes. Add mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds, keeping it clear of the stems. A sunny site with healthy soil will encourage strong growth and generous flowering.

Rose 'Penelope' care tips

Rose 'Penelope' benefits from regular watering, feeding, and pruning to maintain healthy foliage and repeat flowering. Water deeply during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and avoid wetting leaves late in the day. Feed in spring and again after the first main flowering flush with a quality rose fertiliser. Remove spent blooms to encourage further flowers and trim back faded stems. Prune in winter to remove dead or crossing growth and open the centre of the bush. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and support soil health.

Rose 'Penelope' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Penelope' generally grows about 1.5 m tall and 1.2 m wide, forming a graceful bushy shrub with flowering stems held above the foliage. Space plants around 1.2 m to 1.5 m apart to allow room for good airflow and natural development. Growth is moderate in a sunny well prepared position, with plants becoming fuller and more floriferous as they establish. Light regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages fresh flowering wood. Rose 'Penelope' is an excellent size for mixed borders, rose gardens, and feature planting.
