Paddy Stephens' Rose

The 'Paddy Stephens' Rose is a popular Hybrid Tea variety that features flowers with an orange centre and salmon-pink exterior. The lightly scented blooms emerge in spring and continue until autumn. The foliage comprises small-sized, dark green leaves, which provide a lovely backdrop to the flowers as it grows to 1.1 m tall and 70 cm wide. The 'Paddy Stephens' rose is commonly included in mixed or border plantings, in a courtyard or cottage garden, or maintained in a container, anywhere the beauty and fragrance can be appreciated.

How to grow the 'Paddy Stephens' Rose in NZ

The 'Paddy Stephens' Rose thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil in most parts of New Zealand. Choose a site with good air circulation and enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Water deeply during dry periods, especially in the first year. Prune in late winter to encourage strong new growth and shape, removing dead or weak stems. Feed with a balanced rose fertiliser in spring and again in summer. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular deadheading will promote continuous flowering.

Paddy Stephens' Rose care tips

Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil for best flowering. Water deeply and consistently, especially in dry spells. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new growth. Feed with a rose-specific fertiliser in spring and mid-summer, and mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage repeat flowering. Ensure good airflow around the plant to minimise disease risk.
