Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere'

How to grow Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and a sturdy support for its climbing stems. Choose a sheltered position that receives at least six hours of sunshine daily and has good airflow. Improve the planting area with compost, position the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water deeply after planting. Tie young stems loosely to wires, trellis, or a strong frame as they grow, spreading them to cover the support. Apply organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems, to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' care tips

Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' benefits from regular feeding, deep watering, deadheading, training, and winter pruning to support healthy growth and repeat blooms. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and summer according to label directions. Water at soil level during dry periods so moisture reaches the roots without unnecessarily wetting the leaves. Tie long new stems to their support as they develop, keeping the growth well spaced. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage further flowering. In winter, remove weak, damaged, and crossing growth, then shorten side shoots and retain strong main stems to build a balanced flowering framework.

Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' typically grows about 5 m tall and 3 m wide when supported, creating generous coverage for large vertical garden features. Allow around 2.5 m to 3 m between plants so each rose has room to develop, maintains good airflow, and can be trained comfortably. Growth is vigorous in fertile soil with regular watering and feeding, especially through spring and summer. Training young stems horizontally or in a fan shape encourages more flowering shoots along the support. Winter pruning keeps Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' manageable and promotes fresh flowering growth in the following season.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere'

Rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere' is ideal for covering large walls, fences, arches, pergolas, obelisks, and trellises in sunny garden spaces.
