Rose 'Graham Thomas'

How to grow Rose 'Graham Thomas' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Graham Thomas' in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Choose a sheltered position that receives at least six hours of sunshine daily to encourage strong growth and abundant flowering. Improve the planting area with compost, set the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water deeply after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the rose establishes, especially in warm or dry weather. Apply organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems, to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and support healthy roots.

Rose 'Graham Thomas' care tips

Rose 'Graham Thomas' benefits from regular feeding, deep watering, deadheading, and winter pruning to maintain healthy growth and repeat blooms. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and summer according to label directions. Water at soil level during dry periods, allowing moisture to soak deeply around the roots. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage further flowering through autumn. In winter, prune out weak, damaged, and crossing stems, then shorten the remaining growth to form a balanced framework. Good airflow and regular monitoring help keep the foliage healthy and attractive.

Rose 'Graham Thomas' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Graham Thomas' typically grows about 1.5 m tall and 1.2 m wide, forming a vigorous upright shrub with a strong garden presence. In favourable conditions, it can also be trained as a small climber against a support. Allow around 1 m to 1.2 m between plants so each rose has room to develop, maintain good airflow, and be easily cared for. Growth is vigorous in fertile soil with regular watering and feeding. Winter pruning encourages dense new growth and plenty of flowering shoots in the following season.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Graham Thomas'

Rose 'Graham Thomas' is ideal for rose gardens, mixed borders, cottage gardens, and sunny spaces where its golden flowers can create a striking focal point. Plant it among blue, purple, white, and silver foliage plants for a rich garden contrast, or group several roses together for a generous flowering display. Its upright habit works beautifully at the back of a border or against a wall with support. Position it near paths and seating areas to enjoy the warm fragrance. The blooms are also excellent for cutting and arranging indoors.
