Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard

How to grow Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard in NZ

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard grows best in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Choose a position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day and provide shelter from strong winds where possible. Before planting, improve the soil with compost or other organic matter. Water deeply during establishment and through prolonged dry periods, directing moisture to the root zone. Apply a quality rose fertiliser during spring and summer to support healthy growth and flowering. Stake the clear stem securely without restricting movement, and mulch around the roots to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard care tips

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard benefits from regular care to maintain a balanced flowering head and healthy growth. Water deeply during dry weather, preferably at the base of the plant to keep foliage dry. Feed with a balanced rose fertiliser from spring through summer, following label directions. Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooming and keep the canopy tidy. Prune in winter to remove weak, damaged, or crossing stems and to maintain an even rounded head. Check the stake and ties regularly so the stem remains secure. Good airflow and removal of fallen leaves will also help reduce common rose diseases.

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard is grown as a clear stem with a rounded flowering head above it, creating an elegant tree like appearance. Overall height commonly reaches around 1.2 to 1.5 m, depending on graft height and seasonal growth, with the flowering head spreading approximately 60 to 90 cm wide. Growth is moderate to vigorous through spring and summer. Allow around 1 to 1.2 m between plants so each standard has enough room for a balanced canopy and good airflow. Regular winter pruning helps maintain the rounded shape, encourages strong flowering stems, and keeps the plant neat and manageable.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard

Rose 'Fragrant Cloud' Standard is ideal for adding height, fragrance, symmetry, and seasonal flower colour to New Zealand gardens. Use it as a feature beside entranceways, along paths, in formal borders, through courtyard gardens, or in large containers near patios where the scent can be appreciated. Repeated standards can create a strong architectural rhythm, while individual plants make elegant focal points. The clear stem allows lower growing perennials or groundcovers to be planted beneath the flowering head without hiding its form. It is particularly effective where a classic rose display is wanted with extra height and fragrance.
