Rose 'Compassion'

How to grow Rose 'Compassion' in NZ

Grow Rose 'Compassion' in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and a sturdy support for its climbing stems. Choose a sheltered position that receives at least six hours of sunshine each day and has good airflow. Improve the planting area with compost, place the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water deeply after planting. Tie young stems loosely to wires, trellis, or a strong frame as they grow, spreading them to cover the support. Apply organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems, to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Rose 'Compassion' care tips

Rose 'Compassion' benefits from regular feeding, deep watering, deadheading, training, and winter pruning to support healthy growth and repeat blooms. Apply a specialised rose fertiliser in spring and summer according to label directions. Water at soil level during dry periods so the roots receive thorough moisture. Tie long new stems to their support as they develop, keeping the growth well spaced. Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage further blooming. In winter, remove weak, damaged, and crossing growth, then shorten side shoots and retain strong main stems to build a balanced flowering framework.

Rose 'Compassion' size, spacing, and growth rate

Rose 'Compassion' typically grows about 3.5 m tall and 2.5 m wide when supported, creating generous coverage for vertical garden features. Allow around 2 m to 2.5 m between plants so each rose has room to develop, maintain good airflow, and be trained comfortably. Growth is vigorous in fertile soil with regular watering and feeding, especially through spring and summer. Training young stems horizontally or in a fan shape encourages more flowering shoots along the support. Winter pruning keeps Rose 'Compassion' manageable and promotes fresh flowering growth in the following season.

Landscaping uses for Rose 'Compassion'

Rose 'Compassion' is ideal for covering walls, fences, arches, pergolas, obelisks, and trellises in sunny garden spaces. Its warm apricot pink blooms add colour and fragrance to cottage gardens, formal gardens, courtyards, and entrances, while the climbing habit creates valuable vertical interest. Use it to soften a boundary, create a flowering gateway, or dress a sunny structure behind lower planting. Position it near a path or outdoor seating area where the fragrance can be enjoyed. The long stems and beautiful blooms are also excellent for cutting and arranging indoors.
