How to grow Rosa 'Peace' in NZ

Plant the Peace Rose in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Space plants to allow airflow, which helps reduce disease. Water deeply once or twice a week during dry spells and mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Apply a balanced rose fertiliser in spring and again in mid-summer to encourage strong growth and prolific blooms. Prune in winter to remove old wood and shape the plant.

Peace Rose care tips

Deadhead spent blooms to promote repeat flowering. Monitor for common rose pests such as aphids and treat promptly if needed. Keep foliage dry when watering to reduce fungal risk. Regular feeding, mulching, and pruning will help maintain plant health and maximise flower production.

Peace Rose size, spacing, and growth rate

The Peace Rose grows 1–1.5 m tall and about 1 m wide with a strong, upright habit. Space plants at least 1 m apart to allow good air circulation and room for growth.

Peace Rose history

It was bred in 1935 by French horticulturist Francis Meilland, who named it ‘Madame A. Meilland’ after his mother. As World War II loomed, Meilland sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Germany, and the United States to protect the variety from being lost. In 1945, as the war ended, the rose was introduced in the US under the name “Peace” and was given to delegates at the inaugural United Nations meeting as a symbol of hope and harmony. It remains one of the world’s best-selling and most beloved roses.
