Pseudopanax lessonii ‘purpurea’, commonly known as the Coastal Five Finger or Houpara, is a NZ native shrub grown for its lush foliage. Fan shaped leaves emerge a deep purple and age to become glossy green. They are complemented with green flowers in summer which are followed by green berries that darken and are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, preferring a well-drained site in full sun for best results. In partial shade it tends to grow with an open habit and somewhat spreading habit. It is tolerant of periods of dry, coastal conditions, and frost once established. This Pseudopanax is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or trimmed into a hedge.
