Pseudopanax lessonii, commonly known as the Coastal Five Finger or Houpara, is a NZ native shrub featuring glossy green leaves that are arranged in the shape of a fan. Green flowers are produced in summer and are followed by green berries which darken with age and are great for attracting birds. This evergreen typically grows to 5 m tall and 3 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. It performs best when grown on a well-drained site in full sun. In partial shade it tends to grow with a more open and spreading habit. It is tolerant of periods of dry, coastal conditions, and frost once established. Pseudopanax lessonii is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or planted around pool and living areas.
