Tulbaghia Milky Way

Social Garlic, Tulbaghia Milky Way, Social Garlic Plant, Ornamental Garlic

Tulbaghia Milky Way, commonly known as Society Garlic or the Social Garlic Plant, is grown for its showy and fragrant flowers. Clusters of pink-white flowers are borne from summer until autumn on stems that rise above the foliage. These are held above the narrow, dark green, strap like foliage which releases a garlic odour when bruised. This ornamental garlic is an herbaceous perennial that grows as a clump to about 30 cm tall and 25 cm wide. The Social Garlic Plant is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in borders and herb gardens, maintained in a container, or mass planted for an impressive show.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Tulbaghia Milky Way (Social Garlic)? We are here to help.

We have a steep bank (approximately 3.5m x 3.5m) that we’d like to plant to help stabilise it. We really like the look of Tulbaghia Milky Way and are considering mass planting them—would they be a good option for this purpose? How many plants would you recommend for that area? I’m also thinking of adding 4–6 Phormium Dark Delight Chocolate plants as well.

Tulbaghia are not really ground holding plants like the flax. However, if you protect the soil with mulch that will reduce erosion and they will become a nice addition.
