Thymus serpyllum Coccineus, commonly known as Red Creeping Thyme, is grown for both its foliage and flowers. The leaves on this herbaceous perennial are lemon scented, small, and dark green. They will often develop a bronze colouring during winter. The foliage is adorned with masses of fragrant, magenta red flowers during summer. These flowers transform the plant and are great for attracting butterflies and the like. It will grow to just 5 cm tall and 30 cm wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. Thymus serpyllum Coccineus is commonly included in the herb garden, used as a lawn substitute, planted between pavers or rocks, used as a groundcover, or allow to trail over a wall or the like. A mass planting of this Thyme looks spectacular.
