Stachys discolor (Silver Stachys)

Stachys discolor is a lovely herbaceous perennial which is grown for both its flowers and foliage. This small plant produces masses of tiny, white flowers on short stems through summer. These are held above the dark green foliage, and affords a lovely contrast. It typically grows to 15 cm tall and 30 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, moderate frost, and reasonable shade. This plant is commonly included in borders, used as a ground cover, planted around the base of larger trees and shrubs, included in cottage or “white” gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or mass planted for a stunning display.

How to grow Stachys discolor in NZ

Stachys discolor thrives in New Zealand gardens when planted in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. This low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant is ideal for borders and dry areas. It prefers a sheltered position and benefits from occasional trimming to maintain a tidy form. Avoid waterlogged soils, especially in winter, to prevent root rot.

Stachys discolor care tips

Stachys discolor prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in free-draining soil. Water sparingly once established, as it is drought-tolerant. Remove spent flower spikes and trim back lightly after flowering to encourage a compact habit. Avoid overly wet conditions in winter, which can cause root issues. A light feed in spring will support healthy growth, but heavy fertilising is not required. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
