How to grow Senecio cineraria (the Dusty Miller plant) in NZ

Senecio cineraria, commonly known as Dusty Miller, grows well in New Zealand when planted in full sun and well-draining soil. This hardy plant tolerates poor soils, coastal conditions, and periods of drought once established. Space plants about 30–40 cm apart to allow room for their silvery foliage to spread. Water sparingly and avoid soggy soil, as this can cause root rot. Trim back spent flowers and leggy growth to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Protect from severe frosts in colder regions.

Senecio cineraria care tips

Senecio cineraria (Dusty Miller) is easy to care for once established. Plant it in a sunny spot with free-draining soil and water only when the soil is dry, as it is drought-tolerant and prone to root rot if overwatered. Trim back any spent flowers and straggly stems to encourage fresh, compact growth. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy foliage. Protect young plants from heavy frost, especially in colder parts of New Zealand.

Dusty Miller companion plants

Dusty Miller (Senecio cineraria) pairs beautifully with plants that complement its silvery foliage. Good companion plants include brightly coloured flowers such as petunias, geraniums, salvias, marigolds, and begonias, which create a striking contrast. It also works well with other drought-tolerant plants like lavender, rosemary, and euphorbia. In mixed borders or containers, combine Dusty Miller with blue or purple blooms like lobelia or ageratum for a softer look. Its foliage enhances both vibrant and pastel plantings.

Dusty Miller propagation

Dusty Miller (Senecio cineraria) can be easily propagated from cuttings. Take healthy, non-flowering stems about 8–10 cm long and remove the lower leaves. Allow the cuttings to dry for a few hours so the ends can callus, then place them in a free-draining potting mix. Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet until roots develop, usually in 2–3 weeks. Once rooted, transplant the young plants into the garden or larger pots. Propagation is best done in spring or early summer.
