How to grow Salvia nemorosa in NZ

Salvia nemorosa grows best in full sun with well drained fertile soil. Water regularly while establishing, then only during prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and remove spent flower spikes to encourage repeat flowering. Good drainage and a sunny position produce the healthiest plants.

Salvia nemorosa care tips

Salvia nemorosa is easy to maintain. Trim faded flower stems to encourage further blooms and cut plants back after the main flowering flush. Water during extended dry weather and mulch lightly to conserve moisture while keeping the crown clear. Feed annually in spring for vigorous growth.

Salvia nemorosa size, spacing, and growth rate

Salvia nemorosa typically grows 40 to 60 centimetres tall and 40 to 50 centimetres wide. Space plants about 40 centimetres apart for good airflow and rapid coverage. Growth is moderate and plants quickly form neat clumps with regular flowering throughout the season.

Landscaping uses for Salvia nemorosa

Salvia nemorosa is perfect for cottage gardens, perennial borders, mass plantings, and decorative containers. It combines beautifully with roses, ornamental grasses, and other sun loving perennials while attracting pollinators. Its long flowering season provides reliable colour from late spring into summer.
