Salvia 'Limelight'

How to grow Salvia 'Limelight' in NZ

Salvia 'Limelight' grows best in full sun with fertile well drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, then only during prolonged dry periods. Improve the soil with compost before planting and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage repeat flowering and vigorous growth. Set the plant at its original nursery depth and water the surrounding soil thoroughly after planting. Allow enough room to reach the root zone for watering during the first growing season.

Salvia 'Limelight' care tips

Salvia 'Limelight' is low maintenance and benefits from light pruning after each flush of flowers to promote fresh growth. Water during extended dry weather and avoid wet soils through winter. Mulch lightly to retain moisture while keeping the crown clear. Feed annually in spring for the strongest flowering display. Check established plants regularly so damaged growth or developing problems can be addressed promptly. Adjust watering to the weather and growing conditions rather than following a fixed calendar.

Salvia 'Limelight' size, spacing, and growth rate

Salvia 'Limelight' typically grows 0.5 to 0.7 m tall and 0.4 to 0.6 m wide. Space plants about 0.5 m apart to allow healthy airflow and full development. Growth is moderate, with plants quickly forming compact flowering clumps in favourable conditions. Measure spacing from plant centres when setting out a border or larger group. Growth will vary with local climate, light, soil, and the level of maintenance provided. Allow access for routine maintenance without crowding the developing roots or foliage.

Landscaping uses for Salvia 'Limelight'

Salvia 'Limelight' is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, mass plantings, decorative containers, and pollinator gardens. It combines beautifully with ornamental grasses and other sun loving perennials while providing long lasting seasonal colour. The flowers attract beneficial insects and create an eye catching display throughout summer. Repeat it through the planting to create a coherent display, or use a single specimen as a focal point. Choose a position where its distinguishing features can be enjoyed from nearby paths or seating.
