The Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) is grown for its rich display of flowers during summer and autumn. It produces long, slender, flower spikes with small, red flowers. The flowers sit neatly above the mid-green foliage and are great for attracting butterflies and birds. All parts of the plant are aromatic and have a pineapple fragrance when crushed. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide, performing best on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is frost hardy once established and does require good levels of moisture during dry periods.
