Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage)

How to grow Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) in NZ

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) thrives in a sunny position with fertile, well drained soil. Choose a location that receives plenty of direct sunlight to maximise flowering and encourage strong growth. Water regularly while plants establish, then reduce watering as they become more resilient. Adding organic matter to the soil before planting helps support vigorous growth and healthy flowering. This variety performs best when protected from severe frost and benefits from good air circulation.

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) care tips

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) is easy to care for and rewards gardeners with an extended flowering season. Remove spent flower stems to encourage additional blooms and maintain a tidy appearance. Water during prolonged dry periods and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Cutting the plant back after flowering can help rejuvenate growth and improve its overall form. Mulching around the base assists with moisture retention and weed suppression.

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) size, spacing, and growth rate

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) develops into a large clump forming perennial that typically reaches around 1.5 to 2 metres tall and about 1 metre wide. Growth is relatively quick during the warmer months when moisture and nutrients are available. Space plants approximately 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart to allow for good airflow and future growth. Its upright habit and impressive flower spikes make it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest.

Landscaping uses for Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage)

Salvia confertiflora (Red Velvet Sage) is ideal for creating bold displays in borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and mixed perennial plantings.
