Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum'

How to grow Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' in NZ

Grow Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' in partial shade or filtered light in moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter. Choose a sheltered position away from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage and reduce the effect of the variegation. Improve the soil with compost or leaf mould before planting and water thoroughly. Keep the soil evenly moist while plants establish, particularly during dry summer weather. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots. A cool woodland style position will encourage the strongest foliage and graceful arching stems.

Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' care tips

Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' is easy to care for once established in a moist shaded position. Water during extended dry spells to prevent the soil from drying out completely, especially while new shoots and foliage are developing. Feed in spring with compost or a light application of slow release fertiliser to support healthy seasonal growth. Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn, as this helps replenish the underground rhizomes. Remove old stems once they have dried. Refresh mulch each year to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a cool root environment.

Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' size, spacing, and growth rate

Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' generally grows about 60 cm to 90 cm tall and spreads around 40 cm to 60 cm wide as its rhizomes establish. Space plants approximately 45 cm to 60 cm apart for a full shaded border display while allowing each clump room to develop. Growth is moderate in moist, organic rich soil, with new shoots emerging each spring and spreading gradually over time. The upright arching form provides height without heaviness. Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' is ideal for adding structure and foliage detail to woodland gardens and shaded spaces.

Landscaping uses for Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum'

Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, underplanting beneath trees, and sheltered paths. Use it in groups to create a layered foliage display or plant it among shrubs for a natural woodland effect. It also performs well in large shaded containers where soil moisture can be managed. Polygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' brings elegance, texture, and seasonal interest to difficult shaded garden spaces.
