Mazus novae-zelandiae is a small, New Zealand native plant. It is a creeping, herbaceous perennial that forms thick patches of mottled green-brown-leaves. It typically grows to only 5 cm tall with a spread of 25 cm. The foliage is adorned during summer and autumn with single, white flowers which are held tightly against the foliage. This plant grows best in full sun or semi-shade conditions along the fringes of wet or swampy areas. It will grow well in better soils provided they are not allowed to dry out. Mazus novae-zelandiae is an unusual plant that can be grown in a container, used as a groundcover, planted beside water features, or used to under-plant larger plants.
