Lilium 'Navona'

How to grow Lilium 'Navona' in NZ

Grow Lilium 'Navona' in a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, well drained soil. Plant bulbs in autumn or spring at a depth around three times their height, with the pointed end facing upward. Improve heavy soils with compost and coarse material so water can move freely around the bulbs. Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist while new growth develops. A sheltered position with morning sun is ideal. Add mulch to conserve moisture and protect the soil, keeping it clear of emerging stems. Good drainage is essential for healthy bulbs and strong flowering.

Lilium 'Navona' care tips

Lilium 'Navona' benefits from regular watering while actively growing and flowering, particularly during dry weather. Feed in spring as shoots emerge with a balanced bulb fertiliser, then repeat after flowering to help build strong bulbs for the following season. Stake taller stems where wind may cause damage. Remove spent flowers, but leave the stems and leaves in place until they turn yellow naturally, as this feeds the bulb. Keep the growing area free of weeds and avoid waterlogged soil. Lift and divide crowded clumps in winter if flowering becomes reduced.

Lilium 'Navona' size, spacing, and growth rate

Lilium 'Navona' generally grows about 70 cm to 100 cm tall and around 20 cm to 30 cm wide, producing upright stems with several large flowers. Space bulbs approximately 20 cm to 25 cm apart for a full display while allowing room for each stem to develop. Growth is quick from spring emergence, with flowering usually occurring in summer. Planting several bulbs together creates the best visual effect and provides valuable height in borders. Lilium 'Navona' dies back after flowering and returns from its bulb each year when grown in suitable conditions.

Landscaping uses for Lilium 'Navona'

Lilium 'Navona' is ideal for sunny borders, cottage style gardens, containers, and cut flower beds. Its upright stems and pure white flowers bring height and brightness to mixed planting schemes, especially when positioned behind lower growing perennials. Plant bulbs in groups for a standout summer display or combine them with silver foliage, pastel flowers, and deep green leaves for contrast. The blooms are also excellent for indoor arrangements. Lilium 'Navona' adds seasonal elegance, strong vertical form, and fresh white colour to gardens where flowers are intended to make an impression.
