Kniphofia thompsonii Details

Kniphofia thompsonii is a variety of the commonly known, Red Hot Poker, and is grown for its impressive flowers. This herbaceous perennial grows as a clump and produces thin, strap like, green leaves. From summer through autumn stems up to 75 cm tall rise above the foliage carrying showy clusters of tubular, red-orange flowers. The nectar in the flowers attracts birds as do the seed capsules following flowering. It typically grows to about 50 cm tall and the same wide, growing best in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow well in partial shade but at the expense of prolific flowering. It is tolerant of dry conditions, coastal environments, and frost. Kniphofia thompsonii is a versatile plant that is ideal for attracting birds, for border planting, planting under trees, adding to mixed plantings, growing in a container, or riparian planting. A mass planting gives a stunning display.
