Kniphofia Little Maid is a variety of the commonly known, Red Hot Poker plant, and is grown for its flowers and form. Stems carrying a dense mass of tubular, yellow flowers rise above the foliage during summer and autumn. The flowers are fantastic for attracting birds. The leaves on this herbaceous perennial are thin, strap like, and dark green. It grows as a tidy clump to about 60 cm tall and the same wide, growing best in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow well in partial shade but this will be at the expense of prolific flowering. This hardy plant is tolerant of frost, most soil types except extreme wet, coastal conditions, and dry periods. Kniphofia Little Maid is commonly used for border planting, underplanting trees, in mixed plantings, planting on a bank, and growing in a container. A mass planting gives a truly impressive display.
