Kniphofia Ernest Mitchell is a variety of the commonly known, Red Hot Poker plant, and is grown for its impressive flowers. This herbaceous perennial grows as a clump and produces thin, strap like, mid-green leaves. In spring, stems rise above the foliage carrying showy clusters of tubular, yellow flowers. The nectar in the flowers attracts birds as do the seed capsules following flowering. It typically grows to about 75 cm tall and the same wide, growing best in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow in partial shade but at the expense of prolific flowering. It is tolerant of dry conditions, coastal environments, and frost. Kniphofia Ernest Mitchell is a versatile plant that is ideal for attracting birds, for border planting, planting under trees, adding to mixed plantings, growing in a container, or riparian planting. A mass planting gives a stunning display.
