Iris kaempferi, commonly known as the Japanese Water Iris, features stunning, purple-blue flowers with a yellow fleck. The showy blooms are borne on sturdy stems from late spring above the lush foliage. This perennial typically grows to 50 cm tall and 40 cm wide with the flowers standing up to 80 cm tall. It performs best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site that does not dry out. Despite their common name, they are not tolerant of being grown in standing water. Iris kaempferi is commonly included in cottage gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, used in border plantings, or planted around the base of deciduous trees and shrubs. A mass planting is a must with this variety to give impact.
