Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily)

How to grow Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) in NZ

Grow Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) in full sun or light shade with fertile, free draining soil that retains some moisture. It performs best in a warm sheltered position and is ideal for containers or garden beds in frost free areas. Plant bulbs with the neck near the soil surface, water well after planting, and keep the soil evenly moist while plants are actively growing. Add compost to improve soil fertility and drainage before planting. Protect Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) from heavy frost and cold wet ground. In cooler regions, grow it in a pot that can be moved to a sheltered position over winter.

Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) care tips

Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) benefits from regular moisture and feeding during active growth. Water when the soil surface begins to dry, but avoid waterlogged conditions around the bulbs. Feed in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy foliage and flower production. Remove spent flower stems to keep the plant tidy, but allow the leaves to remain until they naturally decline, as they help replenish the bulbs. Protect plants from frost and reduce watering in cooler months when growth slows. Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) rewards simple care with lush foliage and striking fragrant flowers.

Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) size, spacing, and growth rate

Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) typically grows about 50 cm to 70 cm tall and 40 cm to 60 cm wide, forming a lush clump of strap shaped leaves and upright flower stems. Space plants approximately 40 cm to 50 cm apart in borders and containers so each clump has room to develop. It has a moderate growth rate in warm conditions and becomes fuller over successive seasons as bulbs establish. Planting in groups creates the most impressive display of white flowers. Hymenocallis liriosme (Spider Lily) is an excellent size for sheltered borders, patios, courtyard gardens, and decorative containers.
