Hosta Sum and Substance is grown for its large, heart-shaped, bright, yellow-green leaves. Bell-shaped, lilac flowers appear in summer and are held neatly above the foliage. These are followed by seed heads that attract birds. This herbaceous perennial will grow to about 1 m wide and 60 cm tall and in cold climates it may die off during winter to regrow again in spring. It grows best in a full sun or partial shade position on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost and cold climates but should not be allowed to dry out. Hosta Sum and Substance is commonly used in tropical and cottage gardens, mass planted as a groundcover, included in borders, maintained in a container, or planted around outdoor living areas. A mass planting affords an impressive display.
