Hosta 'Sagae'

How to grow Hosta 'Sagae' in NZ

Hosta 'Sagae' grows best in partial to full shade with fertile, well drained soil that retains moisture. In NZ, it performs well in sheltered locations protected from harsh sun and drying winds. Prepare the soil with compost before planting to improve structure and moisture retention. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warmer months. Mulching helps maintain even moisture levels and protects the roots.

Hosta 'Sagae' care tips

Hosta 'Sagae' is low maintenance and thrives with regular watering during dry periods. Apply a general fertiliser in spring to support strong, healthy growth. Remove any damaged or old leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Watch for slugs and snails, which can damage the foliage. Dividing clumps every few years helps maintain vigour and allows you to expand your planting areas.

Hosta 'Sagae' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hosta 'Sagae' is a large growing variety that typically reaches around 80 to 100 cm tall and spreads to about 120 to 150 cm wide. It has a moderate growth rate and develops into a bold, arching clump over time. Space plants around 100 to 120 cm apart to allow for full development and airflow. Its size makes it ideal for creating structure and presence in shaded gardens.
