Hosta 'Great Expectations'

How to grow Hosta 'Great Expectations' in NZ

Hosta 'Great Expectations' grows best in partial shade or full shade with fertile, well drained soil that retains moisture. Improve the soil with compost before planting and water regularly while the plant establishes. A layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and keeps the roots cool during summer. Feed with a quality fertiliser each spring to encourage lush healthy foliage and steady growth.

Hosta 'Great Expectations' care tips

Hosta 'Great Expectations' requires little maintenance once established. Water during prolonged dry weather to keep the foliage looking its best and remove damaged or ageing leaves as needed. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring and tidy the plant after the leaves die back in autumn. Check regularly for slugs and snails, particularly when fresh growth first appears in spring.

Hosta 'Great Expectations' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hosta 'Great Expectations' develops into a large clump reaching about 60 to 70 centimetres tall with a spread of 90 to 120 centimetres. It grows steadily and becomes increasingly impressive as it matures. Space plants around 90 to 120 centimetres apart to provide room for full development, healthy air circulation, and a striking display of colourful foliage.
