Heucherella 'Sweet Tea'

How to grow Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' in NZ

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter. Prepare the planting area with compost to improve soil structure and fertility. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain consistent moisture during dry periods. Avoid planting in areas that remain waterlogged, as good drainage is important for root health. A sheltered position will help maintain vibrant foliage colour and encourage healthy growth throughout the year.

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' care tips

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' is easy to care for and requires only minimal maintenance. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage development. Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly for plants growing in containers. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years can help maintain vigour and keep plants performing at their best.

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' typically grows to around 0.3 to 0.4 m tall and spreads 0.45 to 0.6 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually forms a dense mound of colourful foliage. Space plants approximately 0.4 to 0.5 m apart when creating border displays or mass plantings. Adequate spacing allows for healthy airflow and ensures each plant can develop its full shape. The broad foliage quickly creates visual impact and attractive ground coverage in suitable locations.

Landscaping uses for Heucherella 'Sweet Tea'

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' is ideal for borders, woodland gardens, container displays, and shaded garden areas. The warm foliage colours provide excellent contrast against green shrubs and flowering perennials, helping create depth and texture in planting schemes. This variety works particularly well when planted in groups, where the foliage colour can be fully appreciated. It is also suitable for edging pathways, softening garden borders, and adding year round interest beneath trees and larger shrubs.
