Heuchera 'Plum Royale'

How to grow Heuchera 'Plum Royale' in NZ

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil enriched with organic matter. Incorporate compost into the soil before planting to improve fertility and drainage. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain consistent moisture during dry periods. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged, as excessive moisture can affect root health. A sheltered location will help maintain the intense foliage colour and encourage strong growth throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' care tips

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' is easy to maintain and requires only basic care. Remove old or damaged leaves as required to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Water during prolonged dry weather, particularly for plants growing in containers. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years will help maintain vigour and ensure ongoing strong performance.

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' typically grows to around 0.25 to 0.4 m tall and spreads approximately 0.35 to 0.5 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually develops into a dense mound of colourful foliage. Space plants around 0.35 to 0.45 m apart when planting in borders or mass displays. Adequate spacing encourages healthy airflow and allows each plant to achieve its full shape, creating a more attractive and long lasting garden display.

Landscaping uses for Heuchera 'Plum Royale'

Heuchera 'Plum Royale' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings. The rich plum foliage creates striking contrast with silver, green, and golden leaved plants, adding depth and texture to landscape designs. This variety is particularly effective when planted in groups where the foliage colour can be fully appreciated. It also performs well beneath trees, along pathways, and around outdoor living spaces where year round colour and interest are desired.
