Heuchera 'Obsidian'

How to grow Heuchera 'Obsidian' in NZ

Heuchera 'Obsidian' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil enriched with organic matter. Prepare the soil before planting with compost to improve fertility and drainage. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain even moisture during dry periods. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged, as poor drainage can affect root health. A sheltered location helps preserve foliage quality and encourages strong growth, ensuring excellent performance throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Obsidian' care tips

Heuchera 'Obsidian' is easy to maintain and requires only simple care. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage fresh growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Water during prolonged dry periods, especially for plants grown in containers. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years helps maintain vigour and ensures continued strong growth and performance.

Heuchera 'Obsidian' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heuchera 'Obsidian' typically grows to around 0.3 to 0.4 m tall and spreads approximately 0.4 to 0.5 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually forms a dense mound of dark foliage. Space plants around 0.4 to 0.5 m apart when creating borders or mass plantings. Adequate spacing improves airflow and allows each plant to develop its full shape. The rich foliage colour creates immediate visual impact and provides a strong contrast against surrounding plants.

Landscaping uses for Heuchera 'Obsidian'

Heuchera 'Obsidian' is ideal for borders, woodland gardens, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings.
