Heuchera 'Green Spice'

How to grow Heuchera 'Green Spice' in NZ

Heuchera 'Green Spice' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil rich in organic matter. Incorporate compost into the soil before planting to improve fertility and drainage. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain even soil moisture during dry periods. Avoid planting in areas that remain excessively wet, as poor drainage can affect root health. A sheltered location helps maintain attractive foliage and encourages strong growth throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Green Spice' care tips

Heuchera 'Green Spice' requires only simple maintenance to remain healthy and attractive. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to encourage fresh growth and keep the plant tidy. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and flowering. Water during prolonged dry weather, particularly for plants growing in containers. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years will help maintain vigour and ensure continued strong performance.

Heuchera 'Green Spice' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heuchera 'Green Spice' typically grows to around 0.25 to 0.4 m tall and spreads approximately 0.35 to 0.5 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually develops into a dense mound of colourful foliage. Space plants around 0.35 to 0.45 m apart when creating borders or mass plantings. Adequate spacing promotes healthy airflow and allows each plant to develop its full shape, resulting in a more attractive and longer lasting display. Allow access for routine maintenance without crowding the developing roots or foliage.

Landscaping uses for Heuchera 'Green Spice'

Heuchera 'Green Spice' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings. The silver green foliage provides excellent contrast against darker plants and helps brighten partially shaded areas. This variety is particularly effective when planted in groups where the foliage colouring and veining can be fully appreciated. It also performs well beneath trees, along pathways, and around outdoor living spaces, providing year round texture, colour, and visual interest. Leave enough open space around the display for its natural character to remain visible.
