Heuchera 'Black Taffeta'

How to grow Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' in NZ

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' grows best in a position with morning sun or partial shade and moist, free draining soil enriched with organic matter. Prepare the planting area with compost to improve soil fertility and structure. Water regularly while the plant is establishing and maintain even moisture during dry periods. Avoid sites that remain excessively wet, as poor drainage can affect root health. A sheltered location helps preserve foliage quality and encourages strong, healthy growth throughout the year.

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' care tips

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' is easy to care for and requires only simple maintenance. Remove old or damaged leaves as required to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage development and flowering. Water during prolonged dry weather, particularly for container grown plants. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Dividing mature clumps every few years helps maintain vigour and ensures continued strong garden performance.

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' size, spacing, and growth rate

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' typically grows to around 0.25 to 0.4 m tall and spreads approximately 0.35 to 0.5 m wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually develops into a dense mound of richly coloured foliage. Space plants around 0.35 to 0.45 m apart when creating borders or mass plantings. Adequate spacing encourages healthy airflow and allows each plant to develop its full shape, resulting in a more attractive and longer lasting display within the landscape.

Landscaping uses for Heuchera 'Black Taffeta'

Heuchera 'Black Taffeta' is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, container displays, and mixed perennial plantings. The near black foliage creates striking contrast against silver, green, and golden leaved plants, adding depth and sophistication to garden designs. This variety is particularly effective when planted in groups where the foliage colour can be fully appreciated. It also performs well beneath trees, along pathways, and around outdoor living spaces where year round colour, texture, and visual interest are desired.
