Haemanthus coccineus, commonly known as the Blood Flower, is an herbaceous perennial grown for its foliage and interesting flowers. The broad and thick leaves are glossy green and complemented with red flowers through spring and summer. The show is quite remarkable. It typically grows to 25 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in partial shade on a well-drained site that is protected from frost. Haemanthus coccineus is commonly grown as an indoor plant, included in rock gardens, used in borders, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools, or used in tropical gardens.
