Gunnera prorepens

Gunnera prorepens is a NZ native that is commonly grown as a groundcover. This herbaceous perennial features purple-green leaves and forms a spreading mound that literally hugs the ground. Small, red flower spikes rise about above the foliage in spring, creating another element of interest to this plant. It typically grows to 20 cm tall and 60 cm wide, growing best when planted in full sun right through to heavy shade on a site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of moderate frost and heavy soils. This Gunnera is great for planting beside water features, using as a ground cover, including in borders, growing in hanging baskets, or for planting around the base of large shrubs.
