Geranium magnificum

How to grow Geranium magnificum in NZ

Grow Geranium magnificum in full sun or light shade with fertile, free draining soil. Choose a position with good airflow and sufficient space for the spreading foliage to develop naturally. Improve the planting area with compost, position the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, particularly during dry weather. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. This hardy perennial performs well in mixed borders, cottage gardens, and sunny open spaces.

Geranium magnificum care tips

Geranium magnificum is easy to care for and benefits from occasional watering, light feeding, and cutting back after the main flowering period. Water deeply during prolonged dry weather to keep the foliage healthy and encourage continued blooms. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser according to label directions if needed. Shear back tired foliage and spent flower stems after flowering to promote fresh growth and a tidy compact shape. Divide established clumps every few years if needed to maintain vigour and create new plants.

Geranium magnificum size, spacing, and growth rate

Geranium magnificum typically grows about 50 cm tall and 60 cm wide, forming a spreading clump with soft mounding foliage. Allow around 50 cm to 60 cm between plants so each one has room to develop, receives good airflow, and creates a full display without crowding. Growth is moderate in fertile soil with regular moisture through spring and summer. Its spreading habit makes it useful for filling gaps beneath shrubs and between taller perennials, while light trimming helps keep the plant tidy.

Landscaping uses for Geranium magnificum

Geranium magnificum is ideal for cottage gardens, mixed borders, rose gardens, edging, and planting beneath shrubs. Its blue flowers create a beautiful contrast with white, pink, yellow, and silver foliage plants, while the spreading foliage softens the front of sunny borders. Plant several together for a generous drift of colour, or use it to fill gaps between shrubs and taller perennials. The relaxed habit makes Geranium magnificum especially effective in informal planting schemes and low maintenance garden areas.
