Erigeron glaucus (Seaside Daisy)

Erigeron glaucus, commonly known as Seaside Daisy, is a hardy, low-growing perennial ideal for coastal and dry gardens. Native to coastal North America but well-suited to New Zealand conditions, it forms clumps 20–30 cm tall and wide, with cheerful lavender-pink daisy flowers from spring through autumn. Its grey-green foliage is salt-tolerant and drought-resistant once established. Perfect for borders, rockeries, and pots, Seaside Daisy adds long-lasting colour with minimal maintenance in sunny, well-drained sites.

How to grow Erigeron glaucus

Erigeron glaucus thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for coastal, cottage, and low-maintenance gardens. Plant anytime between spring and autumn, spacing the plants 30–40 cm apart. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry spells. This plant is drought-tolerant once mature. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms and trim back in late winter to refresh growth. It performs best in sandy or gritty soils and tolerates salt spray and wind.

Planting and Care Tips

Plant Erigeron glaucus in a sunny position with well-drained soil; sandy or gritty soils are ideal. Space plants 30–40 cm apart to allow for natural spreading. Water regularly during the first growing season, then reduce as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Trim back spent flowers to prolong blooming and cut back foliage in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh, compact growth. It’s an excellent low-maintenance option for coastal, dry, or exposed areas. Avoid overly wet soils.
