Ensete ventricosum Maurelii

Red Banana

“Maurelii” is an herbaceous perennial that closely resembles the banana plant. It features large, paddle-shaped leaves which range in colour from deep brown, to red-purple, to pale green. They originate from the centre of the plant and have a thick midrib. White flowers are borne in large clusters in spring and result in red, banana like fruits which are dry and unpalatable. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. It will be damaged by frosts and requires good wind protection. “Maurelii” is commonly included in tropical gardens, added to a mixed planting, planted around outdoor living areas, maintained in a container, or added to a courtyard garden. This is a very showy plant that is sure to impress.
