Dietes robinsoniana

Lord Howe Wedding Lily, Dietes morea robinsoniana, Moraea robinsoniana

Dietes robinsoniana, commonly known as the Lord Howe Wedding Lily, is a variety of Iris that produces numerous white flowers marked with a small, yellow stripe near the centre. They are borne on wiry stems from spring through summer. It grows as a clump with the foliage comprising sword-like, green leaves arranged in a loose fan as it grows to 1.2 m tall and 1 m wide. The Lord Howe Wedding Lily is great for adding a splash of colour to the garden and is well suited to planting against a plain wall. It is often used in public gardens, beautification of commercial premises, or planted along roadsides. Dietes robinsoniana is a somewhat rare plant.

Dietes robinsoniana care

Dietes robinsoniana care is simply about getting a few easy things right so the plant thrives. They prefer a sheltered spot in full sun or part shade. A well-drained, fertile soil is crucial for success as heavy and wet soils can cause root rot issues. Adding organic matter like compost into the soil during planting will help with soil fertility. They prefer a dry soil but will benefit from watering during dry periods but be careful to avoid overwatering. Applying shrub fertiliser in spring will keep the plants well-fed for the year. Prune in autumn and winter to remove spent leaves. New leaves will emerge when conditions warm. Applying mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Monitor for mealy bugs around the roots and treat as needed with a systemic insecticide or soil drench.

What does the Dietes robinsoniana iris need to grow well?

Dietes robinsoniana iris plants grow best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained soil. They are tolerant of frost, coastal environments, and humid climates. Some wind protection is important to ensure the flowers are not damaged and encourage more prolific flowering.
