Dicentra spectabilis Alba (aka Lamprocapnos spectabilis Alba), commonly known as the White Bleeding Heart plant, is a bulbous plant grown for its foliage and amazing flowers. The fine foliage is fern-like in appearance and is complemented with nodding, heart-shaped, white flowers. The flowers adorn the plant in late spring and summer, turning a lovely plant into a spectre of beauty. As conditions cool, the foliage develops yellow tones and dies back as it becomes dormant for winter. This plant typically grows to 40 cm tall and 30 cm wide, and performs best when planted in a well-drained soil in either full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of dry conditions, frost, and coastal conditions. Dicentra spectabilis Alba is commonly used in cottage and “white” gardens, included in a mixed planting, or maintained in a container. A mass planting on a bank of the like provides an amazing display.
